Care Communities...also known as Continuing Care Communities (CCRC's) or Life Care Communities

What are care communities?  Where do you find them?  Who are they for?

Names used for these types of facilities are CCRC's standing for continuing care retirement communities or Lifecare communities.

How do they differ from assisted living communities?  They have a continuum of care that meets a persons needs throughout life.  In assisted communities sometimes it becomes necessary to have more care such as nursing and long-term care. This may necessitate moving from the assisted or independent community to another community at a different location or hiring an outside nurse.  At a CCRC you can remain at the same community, although, in some cases, you may be moved to a different building.

If you have Alzheimer's in your family history you may wish to select a care community or other type than one that only provides assisted living since Alzheimer's disease and other dementia diseases get progressively worse until eventually the patient will need full-time nursing care.

Assisted living communities generally do not include nursing or hospice. Therefore, continuing care communities meet longer term care needs should they become necessary.

Future Care

These communities are great for those who want peace of mind for the future that they will be cared for should they need it.  They are also good if one is concerned for the spouse's care when one dies before the other.

There are further distinctions between CCRC's and Life Care.

How Do You Qualify for these Types of Communities

  • Be in good health when applying so that you can live independently
  • Show you are able to financially afford the community for life
  • Be able to pay a large entry fee and qualify for the monthly fee

The eligible age varies depending on the community but most people applying are over 55.  Sometimes the community will set an age limit such as 55 or 62.  If applying when older, you must be independent and in good health without degenerative diseases.

The fees:  This also varies depending on the community.  Some communities require an entry fee and some do not.  The fee can be large or small.  The important thing is if you do make an entry deposit, make sure the community is in good financial condition so that you can receive a refund if it becomes necessary or is promised.

Most have programs--some being quite outstanding--with the goal of keeping you healthier longer--so they feel the sooner you get started the better.

Many of these communities also offer respite services for home caregivers and/or adult daycare programs.
